Round Robin Photo Challenge: On the Ceiling

The challenge:  "Let's face it. some ceilings are boring. But some are well worth a look. Show us a vaulted ceiling, exposed wood beams, or even a popcorn ceiling with an interesting water stain. Maybe it's a ceiling from which hangs an awesome chandelier, or a ceiling covered with mirror tiles. Whatever it is, if it's interesting, I want to see it!"


Luckily for me, I've seen a lot of interesting ceilings lately!  A month ago I visited Washington DC, a city full of interesting ceilings.  Here are a few:

Round Robin Photo Challenge: In The Park

The Challenge:  "Photograph a scene in a park, preferably with people enjoying the place. Your venue can be the little park down the street, a big city park, Yellowstone Park or anything in between. A public garden or plaza also counts, an amusement or theme park, a zoological park, or even a car park!"


I love this topic!  Unfortunately, the attendance at parks here is not amazing, and the weather has been so chilly this season that the people who normally would go aren't.  It makes me sad that parks are so little used here!  What I have loved about my trips to Europe are that people are out living in these public spaces - they are the local hangouts and meet-up places.  Some of my favorite moments in Europe were spent in parks, so that is what I have to share:

Barcelona - What I found so interesting about this is that the building is so old (1556) and someone would deface it.    It's like carving your name into valuable antique furniture to let strangers know you were there!

Taken in Munich -  On more than one occasion I saw swastikas spray painted in this city, a few where others had come through later and painted X's through them.  Surreal being in Germany and seeing this type of graffiti - means something different than when I've seen them in America.

Round Robin Photo Challenge: Collections

My collection is small but growing.  I hope it is the type of collection that by the time I am gray-haired I can look at it and smile because of its variety and depth.  It is made up of sea glass, small rounded stones, and broken shells that are smoothed to perfection by years of being tossed through sand and waves.  The contents of the jar are pieces collected from the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean coasts, as well as from the banks of Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. My compulsion to pick up these pieces was at first annoying - I felt that I was too old to be fascinated by wet stones, yet as an adult I was literally leaving beaches with sandy pockets full of them.  Now I find them to be treasures that are almost like secrets that only I understand.  I know the time I spend looking for the perfect stones and trying to find the tiny nuggets of sea glass. I never know in advance exactly what I am looking for until I see it, so the ones that make it into the jar  have an extra special something that made me reach for it among thousands of others.  And they are mine.
